Missouri Women In Trades is a not for profit dedicated to supporting and promoting women in the construction trades. Currently, women make up about 2% of the construction trades workforce. These women enjoy their careers and want to encourage other women to consider a career in the construction trades.
Incorporated in 2008, Missouri Women In Trades began with a group of tradeswomen and their supporters organizing to provide support to each other and seeking a way to create change in the industry. These tradeswomen enjoy the work but find that support from other women is important to facing the challenges of the industry. They also know that the industry is expecting worker shortages and that many women are seeking good paying careers from which they can support themselves and their families.
In September 2006, MOWIT began holding monthly support meetings for tradeswomen and aspiring tradeswomen. In May 2007, MOWIT received support from the Incarnate Word Foundation and began developing an organization that would promote and support women in the trades.
Construction is a growing industry with a variety of opportunities for good paying careers. Many women enjoy careers in the construction trades. The construction trades are nontraditional for women representing less than 2% of the workforce. Missouri Women In Trades (MOWIT) promotes and supports women working in the construction trades.
Our primary goals:
Recruit—increasing the number of women working in the construction trades;
Retain—increasing the retention and worker satisfaction rates for women working in the construction trades;
Advocate—increasing the opportunities for women in the construction trades.
Missouri Women In Trades works to achieve these goals by building awareness of the trades as a career choice for women; assisting women entering and completing apprenticeship programs; providing a support network for tradeswomen; providing recruitment and retention assistance for unions, employers, and educators; and supporting local and state adovcacy efforts.
